Social Justice
We have a welfare state because we want to live in a fair and decent society. But we do not always know what a fair and decent society really means. Often we rely on notions of fairness that are inadequate, poorly thought through or even elitist.
The Centre believes that the current theories of social justice that dominate party politics in Western societies are too shallow. They do not adequately understand:
- Citizenship - what it takes to encourage active citizenship in both public and private
- Family - how families are nourished and supported
- Community - the value and role of community in enabling lives of meaning

Simon Duffy leads the work of the Centre in developing alternative accounts of social justice which better respect the real interests of the whole community - especially those most likely to experience exclusion and disadvantage.
