Alison Chalmers

Alison Chalmers

Alison is a voluntary sector health and well being co-ordinator, trainer, advocate, freelance writer, EasyRead exponent, fighter and mother – and plays all these roles but not necessarily in the right order.

Alison has a degree in Communication Studies and writes ostensibly about bringing up her daughter with Down’s syndrome and the experiences of people learning disabilities and their carers. She has worked in health literacy for people with learning disabilities, community development and patient empowerment and engagement in health and social care.

Alison's EasyRead book on diabetes was Commended in the BMA Book Awards of 2007 and her work with young carers and mental health issues was hailed as an example of good practice in involving young people.

When not trying to save the universe Alison is Chair of the Twisting Ducks Theatre Group in Newcastle and a non-executive director of Thera North and has recently set up an EasyRead advisory service, Wordsworth. Alison lives in Whitley Bay in North Tyneside and enjoys reading, beach combing and not answering on the ‘phone.
