How Incomes Changed (percent) (1977-2014)

Between 1977 and 2014 tax and benefit policy has been designed primarily to life the incomes of middle-income families

Over the past 40 years or more UK government policy has proclaimed its interest in reducing poverty and inequality. If we compare incomes in 1977 and 2014 we find that economic changes have pushed incomes down for the poorest 80% while Government policy has focused on lifting middle-incomes. Reducing poverty has not been a policy objective.
