Bierlow House was apparently named to commemorate the ancient name for that part of Sheffield in which it is situated, Ecclesall Bierlow. Bierlow was commonly used in place names in Yorkshire to describe an extensive parish, which also acted as the area for a local court of justice. Bierlow comes from the same root as 'by-law' which is in turn derived from the Middle English word 'byrlaw'. This word is derived from the Old Norse for local law 'byjar'.
So, in other words Bierlow is derived from the ideas of community and justice - two ideas that are also very important to the Centre for Welfare Reform.
