New Script for Care Managers

The Centre for Welfare Reform, in association with Paradigm, and with support from Blackburn with Darwen has published a discussion paper setting out a new approach to care management that will enable social workers to use their skills and energy more effectively.

Currently social workers are being asked to deliver personalisation in the context of the old industrialised system of care management. In the future social workers need:

  • To be able to directly connect people to peer, community and service providers
  • To provide clear information about budgets, rules and local resources
  • To focus on those people who really need help
  • To encourage people to take more control of their own planning

Unless these changes are introduced it is likely that social workers will be put under unnecessary pressure and be asked to work in ways which contradict the spirit of personalisation. It will also make personalisation very inefficient. se self-directed support.
